Beginner classes are six weeks long and are geared toward beginners to yoga, or those who are new to the Iyengar method of teaching yoga: all ages and fitness levels are welcome. Equipment is provided.
This course is offered in two 6-week segments, Beginner A and Beginner B. Click here for a flyer about the next available beginners' classes.
50+ Yoga
These classes aim to address the flexibility, balance and stress needs of those
who are 50 years or more. The poses taught in this course are similar to
those taught in the Beginner A & B course, but they are done with more
support and with a gentler and more mindful approach.
Level I classes are for students who have either completed both Beginner
A & B, or who have had previous training in Iyengar Yoga. If you have
had training in another style of yoga then please call to inquire about starting
at Level I. Inversions and simple back-bends are introduced. This
course is also offered in two 6-week segments, Level I A and Level I B.
Level II classes are for students who have been taking Level I classes
for at least one year, and who are confident in coming up in head balance (sirsasana).
Yoga philosophy (Patanjali's Yoga Sutras) are integrated more than in previous
levels into the practice of asana, and pranayama is taught every four weeks at
this level.
Level I-III is a monthly 3-hour workshop with a different focus each
month (please click here for workshop information
and dates).
Level II/III is for experienced students with a regular
practice. Variations in sirsasana and sarvangasana, back-bends,
forward-bends and twists of all kinds, and pranayama are taught in these
classes.
Multilevel is open to all students who have completed Beginner A &
B, or who have experience in other styles of yoga.
Asana Variations class addresses low back pain, neck and shoulder
problems. This class is open to those with or without experience in yoga.
Please call for information.
Restorative/Gentle Yoga:
Come re-energize yourself in this class! Most of the poses taught here are
resting poses that open the chest and loosen stiff shoulders, relax tired backs
and refresh scattered or stressed minds. This is a great way to begin the
weekend. No prerequisites are required for this class
Vinyasa is open to beginners and experienced students alike. Poses
are initially taught individually, then linked together in invigorating
sequences.
Back Care Program
Are you suffering from low back pain? Learn how to relieve your pain, reduce mental stress and correct underlying imbalances leading to chronic pain. This program will provide you with the knowledge and skills for you to play an active role in your recovery. It is based on the therapeutic application of Iyengar yoga. Evaluation of its efficacy in comparison to a randomized educational control indicates that significant decreases in pain and pain medication usage as well as improvements in function can be expected. This class is open to those with or without experience in yoga.
Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (Mindfulness Meditation -- Vipassana)
This 6-week course is a very practical method for learning to experience each moment more fully. It involves learning to develop moment-to-moment awareness of your thoughts, feelings and body sensations through a number of mind-body practices including gentle stretching, meditation, breath awareness and full body awareness. The program will help you uncover inner resources for coping with stress, gain insight into the underlying basis of your stress reactions, and learn to transform problems into opportunities for growth.
T'ai Chi (taught by Rives Thornton) is a
(soft) Chinese martial art that promotes health and longevity.
